Round 6 of Seminars begins!

Today was the first day of Round 6 of seminars for the year. For the next 4 1/2 weeks students will be in one of the following three seminars:

Climate Change (Credits: .125 APP / .125 English 12)

Description:
How do we manage increasingly scarce fresh water resources, pressures on water quality, policy regulation and distribution, water contamination, etc.

Phobias and Disorders (.125 Psychology / .125 English)

We will also talk about eating disorders and the fears and perceptions that underlie those. Readings will include both fiction and nonfiction regarding these issues, as we take a look at how real people deal with these issues and how literary characters display the inner world of these ideas.

Alternate Sources of Energy (Credits: .125 Eng12/.125 Bio or Environmental)

Description:
Think outside the box, look into well known alternative sources, and try to find lesser known alternative energy sources. Comparing and contrasting with discussion of what we can do this summer to promote alternative energy usage. We will try to contact people in the community to to find out how they use other energy resources, and see if they are willing to try new practices to reduce their carbon footprint.

Progress Reports Sent Home

We have wrapped up Round 5 of seminars and we are on to Round 6. You should be receiving your child’s progress report in the mail today, February 27. The transcript is a summary of both first and second semester credits earned. At this point in second semester, students should have earned one quarter of the credits they will earn for the entire semester. For example, if they are enrolled in a RHS class and will end up earning .5 credit at the end of the semester, at this point they should have earned .125 credit toward that .5 credit. You can access your child’s Lumen transcript at lumen.projectfoundry.org and specific graded assignments www.engrade.com

Webster Foundation Grant

On Tuesday, February 12, Lumen gratefully accepted $2000.00 in grants from the Webster Foundation. The grants provide us with the flexibility and opportunity to purchase classroom items that directly impact student learning. We will also use the grants to help fund meaningful student generated projects that otherwise may not be developed due to financial constraints. The grant will help fund field trips that will provide our students with valuable learning opportunities beyond what we can offer in the classroom. In addition, a new media production computer will be purchased. We are so very grateful to the Webster Foundation for their generosity. The Webster Foundation Grant will help Lumen Charter High School continue to foster and develop a dynamic learning environment with unique opportunities for students!
