Water Quality Project

For the last two years, Lumen has participated in a statewide citizens’ water quality monitoring effort called WAV — Water Action Volunteers. The idea behind the program is to collect baseline data on surface water quality across the state to inform policy makers. Lumen — as part of its commitment to project-based and place-based learning — adopted two local sites to monitor each month from April through October. Numerous students have helped out in the last two years, learning why and how to measure dissolved oxygen, turbidity, stream flow and temperature, and to assess stream bank habitat and macroinvertebrate populations. This coming spring, we will offer a seminar devoted to local water quality issues.

Here are a few pictures of students in action…

Poinsettia Fundraiser

The Annual Poinsettia Fundraiser is underway.  Last week students were given information and Poinsettia vouchers.  The money raised will be used to support student projects, and helps to cover the costs associated with field trips, seminar speakers, and classroom activities. Please support our fundraiser – it directly impacts our students and helps to provide them with more opportunities!  Here is a copy of the information that was sent home with students.

Team Building

Monday was the end of Round 2 for seminars, so yesterday was a team building day to mark the beginning of Round 3 of seminars and the start of Second Quarter.  Students had fun playing team building games.  The 3 games they played were;  The Dice Stacking Game, Candy Elevators, and Back-to-Back Drawing.

We also had some large group discussion time where we reflected on what we have been doing well and what needs improvement as we begin Second Quarter.
